About Collectable Mickey Mouse Watches

Mickey Mouse is everyone’s favourite cartoon character.

It stands to reason that everyone wanted a Mickey Mouse Watch in 1933  when Disney and Ingersol brought out the first Mickey Mouse watch (a venture that saved Ingersol from Bankruptcy).

These are some of the most collectable Mickey mouse Watches (everyone wants an early Mickey watch)

The first one was by Ingersol and was a wristwatch and was followed by a pocketwatch (more collectable)

The early wristwatch featured  revolving disc with 3 small Mickeys and was round in shape. This was produced for a number of years.

However so many were sold that they are not as valuable as you’d think.

Most people collected them and hid them in a bureau for their kids to find.

To be valuable these early watches have to be boxed and in Prime (preferably unworn) condition.

Ingersoll produced Mickey Mouse watches until the 1940s and 1950s and in the 1960s Ingersoll was renamed as US Time ane then became up  as Timex.

In the 1960s a Mickey Watch was even produced without a picture of mickey - the words Mickey Mouse were used instead. In the 1960’s several models were produced including classics like the Mod Watches.The most collectable watch from Disny in this era was the very sought after watch - the  backwards Goofy watch, manufactured by Helbros.The Goofy watch did actually run anti clockwise and is great fun ! (The hands moved backwards so the numbers were place on backwards.

Since this watch was sold in 1972 the watches became legendary - everyone wanted one.

They are now quite rare but you can still find them on eBay.

Although they originally sold for $19.95 (where are those time machines when you need one ?) they now sell at auction for Over $800 in average condition.

Just a word about condition -

Collectors are only really looking for any collectable Mickey watch in pristine condition (not scratches on the watch body  - (no scratches on the face or replacement watch straps) any one of those defects seriously lessens the watch value.

BEWARE OF FAKE DISNEY WATCHES FROM THE FAR EAST

Thes are good copies and turn up on market stalls or cheap shops

This usually disappoint buyers by breaking down very quickly or by tarnishing.

More recently well known watch makers are proud to be associated with Mickey Mouse and his friends and these include Seiko, Fossil, and Colibri.

Recent Mickey Mouse watches include a lot of different models including digital watches,waterproof and sports models

The short was co-directed by Walt Disney and Ub Iwerks.Ub Iwerks was also theprimary animator for this short, and reportedly spent six weeks working on it. It is said, Iwerks was the main Cartoonist for all of Disneys short released in 1928 and 1929. Mainly Harman and Ising also helped Disney at the start of the Disney career. Although they were signing their contracts with Charles Mintz, but he was still in the process of forming his new studio and so for the time being they were still working for and employed by walt. This cartoon would be the final movie they animated under this somewhat awkward situation.

Minnie Mouse watches are now really popular and many movie stars have been seen wearing them.
I think that Minnie and Mickey Mouse watches will certainly be the desirable antiques of the future and wil of course be useful as timepieces in the meantime.
